Immunomodulatory activity

Evaluation of immunomodulatory activity was performed by testing with ELISA kit pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1 , TNF-α) on human lymphocytes (PBMC) isolated from healthy volunteers in an in-vitro model. Human lymphocytes were monitored under basal conditions and samples were tested at 1-10-20 µg/ml.

EchiPure-PC® works by modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines at the basal level without any inflammatory stimulus. The three Echinacea extracts chosen as competitors have proved to be effective in modulating cytokine expression but in a different way than EchiPure-PC®.  The study showed that EchiPure-PC® has a qualitatively and quantitatively similar effect to an extract from Echinacea angustifolia titrated in echinacoside and to an extract from Echinacea pallida, also titrated in echinacoside. EchiPure-PC®, although not containing any echinacoside, was found to be far superior to a commercially available Echinacea purpurea extract, showing greater immunomodulatory activity.

specifications

The Mother Plant of Echinacea purpurea, able to generate specific substances useful for its growth and development within an ideal phytocomplex, has been carefully selected and certified through the DNA fingerprint technique. Echinacea spp represents the largest group of herbs with immunomodulating activity in Europe and USA for treating cough, cold and respiratory tract infections. Its action is believed to result in an increasing of endogenous immune defenses and protection of the immune system, mainly through the activation of neutrophil phagocytosis and modulation of interleukin and interferon production. It has also been shown a bacteriostatic and antiviral capacity of Echinacea extracts and its ability to counteract infections caused by different bacterial and viral strains such as Herpes simplex and influenza A and B, as well as Trichomonas, Candida and Listeria.
